Nasonex

Nasonex, which is generically prescribed as mometasone nasal, is used to control the symptoms of nasal allergies. Nasonex is considered a steroid. Steroids prevent the body from creating the chemicals necessary to increase inflammation.

Nasonex is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history that includes viral infections, bacterial infections, fungal infections, or a compromised immune system should not take Nasonex. Nasonex inhibits the body’s ability to fight infections. Patients with a nasal septum ulcer, have had recent nasal surgery, or any type of nasal damage may not be able to take Nasonex or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.

The American Food and Drug Administration has rated Nasonex with a pregnancy risk rating category C which means that it has yet to be determined whether Nasonex causes harm or birth defects in an unborn baby. It has not yet been determined whether or not Nasonex passes through the mother’s breast milk. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to a pregnant or nursing woman.

Nasonex comes with a risk of side effects, some of which are severe. A patient who is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms that include facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require immediate emergency medical care include symptoms such as severe nasal burning and bloody noses that can not be controlled.

Less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as stinging of the nose, burning nasal passages, muscle pain, painful menstruation, upper respiratory tract infection, coughing, bloody nose, sore throat, viral infection, or headaches. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Nasonex.

Nasonex should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed by the physician. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. If it is close to the time for the next scheduled dose, however, then the missed dose should be skipped to avoid a potential overdose. While an overdose is unlikely, a patient who is suspected of overdosing should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose is likely to present with symptoms such as uncontrollable nose bleed, severe nasal burning, and a severe headache. Ingestion is not likely to occur if this medication is kept out of the reach of children. If ingestion is suspected, emergency medical care is necessary. An ingestion overdose may produce symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Nasonex comes with a risk of negative drug interactions. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. Medications that have a known negative drug interaction with Nasonex includes oral steroids, inhaled steroids, and other nasal sprays.

Patients taking Nasonex should avoid infectious diseases such as chicken pox, influenza, and other infectious diseases. Patients on Nasonex will not have a normal immune system while taking this medication.
