适应症

主要用于偏头痛发作，于先兆症状出现后立即用药效果最好。偏头痛的发生主要由于颅外动脉和小动脉的扩张所引起，而本品有直接收缩脑血管的作用，减少动脉搏动的幅度，减轻头痛症状。
本品与咖啡因有协同作用，故常混合制成片、栓剂等。
对血管有明显的收缩作用，对子宫亦有收缩作用，但比麦角新碱弱。
用法用量

1次l-2mg，如需要，每30-60分钟1次，但1日不得超过6mg，1周内不超过12mg。
肛门给药：1次2mg，l小时1次，可连用2次，1周不超过6次。

注意事项

1．高血压、心绞痛、闭塞性血管病、肝肾疾病及孕妇禁用。
2．用药后，病人最好静卧2小时。
3．本品治疗偏头痛，只能减轻症状，无预防和根治作用。
副作用

有恶心、呕吐、腿软、四肢肌肉痛等，偶有过敏反应。

Cafergot is one of a group of medicines known as ergot alkaloids or Psychopharmacologic and Neuralgic (CNS) Drugs, commonly used to prevent certain kinds of throbbing headaches such as migraine and cluster headaches. Cafergot/Caffeine acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to produce its muscle relaxant effects. Cafergot comes in catagry of drugs called Caffeine. Cafergot/Caffeine is being manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and is available in tablets.

What are the most common problems for which Cafergot/Caffeine is used?

Cafergot/Caffeine commonly used to prevent certain kinds of throbbing headaches such as migraine and cluster headaches. Migraine headaches usually cause a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, increased sensitivity to light and sound, and other symptoms may accompany the pain. Migraine is thought to be caused by electrical and chemical imbalances in certain parts of the brain. These imbalances affect the blood vessels in the brain -- first tightening them up, and then widening them. As the blood vessels widen, they stimulate the release of chemicals that increase sensitivity to pain and cause inflammation and swelling.therefore Cafergot/Caffeine used for the prevention and treatment of these symptoms that occurs due to migraine and cluster headaches, such as:

• Cafergot/Caffeine is useful for the treatment of Throbbing pain on one side of the head. Because the pain of migraine often occurs on one side. Pain also sometimes spreads to affect the entire head. Cafergot/Caffeine is used in combination with rest, physical therapy, pain medicine, and other therapies.
• Cafergot/Caffeine is used for treatment of pain worsened by physical activity.

How does Cafergot/Caffeine works?

Cafergot/Caffeine is one of a group of medicines known as psychopharmacologic and neuralgic (CNS) Drugs. Cafergot/Caffeine drugs based on this chemical are sometimes used to treat migraine attacks or vascular headaches. Vascular headaches are caused by the swelling and expansion of the blood vessels around the pain-sensitive nerve structures within the head (cranium). When an artery becomes distended, the delicate network of nerve fibers around it stretch and give off pain signals that may increase with each pulse. This creates the throbbing effect often associated with this type of headache. Cafergot/Caffeine is a cranial vasoconstrictor, which means it helps relieve headaches by tightening the distended blood vessels that are causing the pain. Although the cause of migraine attacks is not fully understood, it is also believed that a chemical called serotonin is released in the brain at the beginning of an attack. Serotonin causes the release of other chemicals that cause blood vessels in the brain to widen.Serotonin itself causes blood vessels in the brain to narrow. Cafergot/Caffeine is thought to work in part by acting on serotonin receptors in the brain, causing the blood vessels to narrow. Cafergot/Caffeine also acts on other types of receptors found on the walls of blood vessels, called alpha receptors. This also causes the blood vessels to narrow.
