Once infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the patient will have to live with it for the rest of the life. There is no treatment to entirely cure this infection, but the good news is that there are plenty of other treatments to keep the disease under control. The active substance in this medication – fosamprenavir – identifies and blocks the multiplying activity of the harmful cells. This way, the infection cannot spread, remaining in the stage it was diagnosed in. Lexiva (fosamprenavir calcium) can be used when the HIV infection is advanced enough and evolved into AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The effect is the same, while the patient must be on a constant care. The disease affects the immune system, making any other infection extremely dangerous, no matter how mild it normally is. The medication can only treat the disease and stop its evolution. It cannot cure or prevent it. In order to prevent the inappropriate use of the drug, it can be used with a medical prescription only. Administration Lexiva (fosamprenavir calcium) is available by extended release tablets and oral suspension. The tablets must be swallowed whole for maximum efficiency. Food is not important when the patients are adults. If the patients are children, they should get the drug with food, in order to prevent some adverse reactions to their sensitive stomachs. If the patient has swallowing difficulties, the doctor may prescribe the oral suspension. Don't chew or divide the tablet for any reason. Instead, talk to your doctor. The oral suspension comes with a medical measuring device. The optimal dose is 1.4g a day. The drug is often associated with ritonavir. Most HIV treatments consist of associated therapies. Ritonavir is probably the most common medication in this treatment. When such associations are made, the dose may be smaller. It is up to the doctor's decision. The Lexiva (fosamprenavir calcium) dose for children depends on their weight. They must get 30mg per kilo, but not more than 1400mg. Contraindications Lexiva (fosamprenavir calcium) will not prevent the HIV transmission. Never share your personal hygiene objects, such as toothbrushes or razors. Having unprotected sex will also transmit the infection to your partner. Your doctor will give you a whole list of restrictions. Secondary effects Expect nausea, headaches or numbness during the Lexiva (fosamprenavir calcium) treatment. If they persist or you also experience chest pain, jaundice or signs of any other new infection, call your doctor as soon as possible.
