In a placebo-controlled double-blind study Haui31er investigated the efficacy of Hirudoid forte cream with regard to the absorption of haematomas after varicotomy at both legs. The postoperative development of haematomas was studied as right left comparison during a four-week period.

    One leg was treated with Hirudoid forte cream, the other leg was treated with the cream base, The treatment began at the latest on the fourth day after surgery. The cream was applied three times daily to the region of the greater saphenous vein and lightly massaged in. Examinations were on postoperative days 4, 6, 10, 14 and 28. The area of haematoma was measured (the area was drawn on paper and quantitatively determined).

    Statistical comparison of the size of the haematomas on post-operative days 6 and 10 showed a faster absorption of the effusion at the side treated with Hirudoid (p < 0.05).

    No side effects were observed.

    Hirudoid can also be recommended for the treatment of cephalhaematomas in the newborn. B6wing treated 42 newborns with Hirudoid starting on the third day of life and showed a clear acceleration of the regression of haematomas as a result of their increased absorption. There were no adverse side effects in any of the cases, which is of particular interest considering that the skin of the newborn is very sensitive.
