Flucloxacillin and ampicillin both belong to a group of antibiotics called the penicillins. They kill bacteria by interfering with their ability to form cell walls. The bacteria therefore break up and die. The inclusion of flucloxacillin means that unlike other penicillins it can be used in infections caused by penicillin resistant bacteria called staphylococci. The reason for this is that unlike other penicillins it is not broken down by the penicillinase enzyme that is produced by this group of bacteria. Therefore the combination of the two antibiotics allows a broader range of bacteria to be killed. What is it used for? Bone and joint infections Infections of the ears, nose or throat Infections of the organs associated with breathing, including nasal passages, sinuses, windpipe and lungs (respiratory tract) Skin or soft tissue infections Warning! Jaundice (yellowing of the skin due to liver problems) may occur even after treatment has stopped. The manufacturer advises that this product should not be used in the eye. The medicine passes into the breast milk, but at normal doses it is unlikely to harm the baby. Discuss with your doctor. Label warnings Take at regular intervals. Complete the prescribed course unless otherwise directed. Take this medication half to one hour before food. How can this medicine affect other medicines? Flucloxacillin and ampicillin may reduce the effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill. The removal of penicillins from the body can be slowed when given with probenecid. Penicillins may decrease the removal of methotrexate from the body increasing the risk of toxicity. Antibiotics such as flucloxacillin and ampicillin may alter the effect of anticoagulants such as warfarin.
