What is Potassium Aspartate?
Potassium aspartate is the salt of potassium and aspartic acid. It is used to aid metabolic processes by replenishing potassium through its ability to transport minerals to metabolizing cells.
When combined with aspartic acid, potassium independently interacts with numerous substances in the body to enhance physiological processes.
Potassium aspartate is a safe and bioavailable analog of both potassium and aspartic acid. Both play a crucial role in general human nourishment and in sports nutrition.
Potassium comprises about 5 percent of the body’s mineral content and is the body’s third most abundant element.
The mineral is an electrolyte and it is important in the transmission of nerve impulses, the contraction of cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscles, the production of energy, the synthesis of nucleic acids, the maintenance of intracellular tonicity and the maintenance of normal blood pressure.
Aspartic acid is a protein amino acid naturally found in all life forms which serves as a precursor for synthesis of proteins, oligopeptides, purines, pyrmidines, nucleic acids and L-arginine. It also promotes energy production via its metabolism in the Krebs cycle and can reduce oxygen consumption by the cells during the energy cycle.
Potassium is an essential mineral in managing and controlling water balance, levels of acidity, blood pressure and neuromuscular function. Potassium is also necessary for carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Excellent sources of potassium include beans, milk, vegetables and most fruits. The best way to ensure you have enough or extra potassium is to consume several pieces of fruit per day, as well as liberal amounts of vegetables.
Health Benefits of Potassium Aspartate
Potassium is essential for proper muscle function and various metabolic processes. It also aids in regulating blood pressure and heartbeat.
Potassium supports energy metabolism as it converts blood sugar not needed immediately into glycogen, a form of stored energy in the liver and muscle tissue.
It is also beneficial in the secretion of insulin as well as in protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism and various enzyme actions.
Abnormally low levels of potassium in the cells can cause what is known as hypokalemia. Hypokalemia can be the result of prolonged vomiting, the use of some diuretics, kidney disease, anorexia, bulimia or any other condition that might cause potassium to exit the body faster than you can replenish it. Fatigue, muscle weakness and cramps, and intestinal paralysis are among some of the symptoms, which may lead to bloating, constipation, and abdominal pain.
The use of prescription drugs such as aldactone, colchicines, digitalis, ACE-inhibitors, steroids, furosemide and other diuretics, penicillin, and the abuse of alcohol or laxatives, all inhibit the body’s ability to absorb potassium. Those taking any of these medications, who have an eating disorder or who are alcohol-dependent should speak to a doctor about the need for potassium supplements.
Purity and Concentration of Potassium Aspartate
This pharmaceutical grade potassium aspartate contains no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents.
Potential Side Effects of Potassium Aspartate
Occasional side effects include diarrhea, loose bowel movements, nausea, gastric upset (stomach pain) and vomiting. Keep potassium aspartate out of reach of children and pets.
While potassium depletion or deficiency is a health risk, high to excessive amounts of potassium are also linked with toxicity. Potassium-containing products should be used only under medical supervision.
Using this medication in excess may cause high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia). Although serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. Do not attempt to achieve higher potassium levels by taking large numbers of potassium pills, as concentrated potassium levels can irritate the gastrointestinal tract.
People using potassium-sparing drugs should avoid using potassium-containing products and should not take potassium supplements unless they are under the supervision of a doctor. Potassium intake that is too high can produce stomach irritation. This side effect that can be avoided if a large portion of potassium requirements is derived from dietary sources.
If you are supplementing with potassium, pay careful attention to how much fruit you are eating daily as fruit contains a high amount of potassium.
Keep potassium products out of reach of children and pets.
Suggested Use of Potassium Aspartate
The suggested serving size for potassium L-aspartate is 335 milligrams daily, or as directed by a physician.
As many foods are sufficiently high in potassium, the FDA recommends no more than 100 milligrams daily intake of elemental potassium. Potassium aspartate powder is 22.7% elemental potassium. A level 1/16 teaspoon will supply about 335 milligrams of bulk potassium aspartate powder, yielding an elemental potassium serving of 76 milligrams, well within FDA guidelines.
