w does it work?

Norprolac tablets contain the active ingredient quinagolide, which is a type of medicine called a dopamine agonist. It works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain.

Quinagolide is used to treat disorders that result from high levels of the hormone prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinaemia). Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. The pituitary gland may secrete excess prolactin due to a malfunction in the gland, or due to the presence of pituitary tumours (eg prolactin-secreting pituitary microadenoma or macroadenoma).

A high prolactin level (hyperprolactinaemia) can cause several conditions. Over-production of this hormone can cause abnormal production of breast milk in both men and women (galactorrhoea), as well as suppression of the sexual glands (hypogonadism), which can result in infertility. High prolactin levels are also associated with a decreased sex drive and some menstrual disorders. Reducing prolactin levels with quinagolide can therefore improve these conditions.

Quinagolide decreases the production of prolactin from the pituitary by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain.

What is it used for?

  • Hyperprolactinaemia (high blood levels of the hormone prolactin), either with no known cause, or resulting from a tumour in the pituitary gland

Warning!

People who have experienced sleepiness or a sudden onset of sleep while taking this medicine should not drive or operate machinary. Caution should be observed when drinking alcohol or taking other medicines that cause drowsiness, as this may increase the risk of drowsiness.
