Teveten HCT Generic Name: Eprosartan
What is Teveten HCT? Teveten HCT is a combination medication consisting of eprosartan (a blood pressure lowering agent) and hydrochlorothiazide (a diuretic or "water pill"). It is used to treat high blood pressure, alone or in combination with other blood pressure medications.
What is the most important information I should know about Teveten HCT? Do not use Teveten HCT during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. This drug can cause injury and even death to the developing baby. Tell your doctor immediately if you think you might be pregnant.
You must take Teveten HCT regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Teveten HCT. You must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Teveten HCT does not cure blood pressure, but keeps it under control.
Teveten HCT can cause an excessive drop in blood pressure, especially when you first begin taking it. Tell your doctor if you feel lightheaded or faint. If you do faint, stop taking Teveten HCT until you see your doctor. Fainting is more likely if you are dehydrated, due to inadequate intake of fluids, excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting.
Excessive fluid loss can also lead to a chemical imbalance in the body. Warning signs include dry mouth, thirst, diminished urination, weakness, lack of energy, drowsiness, restlessness, confusion, seizures, muscle pain, muscle fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and rapid heartbeat. Alert your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms.
Who should not take Teveten HCT? Do not take Teveten HCT if you are pregnant, if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it, or if you cannot urinate or are sensitive to other sulfonamide drugs.
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Teveten HCT? Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Teveten HCT. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of allergy, wheezing or breathing difficulties, kidney or liver disease, lupus (a disease that affects the immune system), joint inflammation, high blood sugar, or parathyroid disease.
What is the usual dosage? The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults: Teveten HCT comes in 2 strengths: 600/12.5 and 600/25 (600 milligrams [mg] of eprosartan and either 12.5 mg or 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide). The usual starting dose is one 600/12.5 tablet per day. If your blood pressure remains too high, the doctor may increase the dose to one 600/25 tablet per day.
How should I take Teveten HCT? Teveten HCT can be taken with or without food. Try to establish a regular routine by taking it at the same time each day: in the morning with breakfast, for example. This reduces the chance that you'll forget a dose.
Lightheadedness is a common side effect when taking Teveten HCT during the first few days. Inadequate fluid intake may be the reason. If you lose consciousness while taking Teveten HCT, discontinue taking it and consult your doctor.
What should I avoid while taking Teveten HCT? Teveten HCT may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or artificial UV light (tanning beds). Teveten HCT may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight and you may be sunburned as a result. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you are outside.
Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Teveten HCT.
Avoid salt substitutes and do not take potassium supplements without first talking to your doctor.
What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Teveten HCT? If Teveten HCT is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Teveten with any of the following: barbiturates, such as phenobarbital or secobarbital; cholestyramine; colestipol; insulin; lithium; narcotic painkillers, such as meperidine or oxycodone; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen; oral diabetes medications, such as glipizide or glucotrol; other blood pressure medications, such as atenolol or nifedipine; potassium-sparing diuretics (water pill), such as amiloride, spironolactone, or triamterene; potassium supplements; and steroid medications, such as prednisone.
What are the possible side effects of Teveten HCT? Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.
Side effects may include: back pain, dizziness, fatigue, headache, inflamed sinus, upper respiratory tract infection, weakness
Can I receive Teveten HCT if I am pregnant or breastfeeding? Teveten HCT can cause injury or even death to an unborn baby, especially when used in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
